Join us for this beautiful workshop introducing the ancient craft of Mayan Spinning. Guided by Viki Cornish (AKA Bonsai Woman), in this fun and engaging introduction to spinning, you'll learn to make your own yarn.

Mayan Spinners are robust, portable and easy to use. Vicki will teach you all the basic spinning skills of drafting fibre, adding twist and plying. Then you will explore a range of fibres to create your own unique yarn.

Participants will receive comprehensive notes, all spinning fibre and a delicious morning tea. In addition our Spinners are handmade locally with recycled timber and will be available to purchase on the day.

About Bonsai Woman
Vicki Cornish is a Newcastle based fibre artist with a particular interest in historical tools and techniques. Vicki hand spun her first fleece over 30 years ago. Working now in the areas of spinning, weaving and stitching, her craft practice focusses on using natural fibres and low impact methods of processing and dyeing.
Vicki is an enthusiastic and encouraging teacher who loves to show students how they can use simple, ancient tools and techniques, to create beautiful, contemporary textiles.
Vicki has tertiary qualifications in both Visual Arts and Applied Fashion Design and Technology, and runs a textiles business called Bonsai Woman.

Workshop Schedule

What you get:
All materials will be provided.
You will take home two mini skeins of hand spun yarn and a 14 page illustrated instruction booklet.
You will learn basic spinning skills that can be transferred to other tools such as a spinning wheel, and get tips and advice from over 30 years spinning experience.
You will get an introduction to the history of spinning and some of the ancient tools our ancestors used to make yarn.
Enjoy a chat and a lovely morning tea as we spin together!
