Knitting is a traditional craft which is not only useful, but can be therapeutic, great for the brain and fun. No longer a ‘Nanna’ pastime, knitting is enjoying a renewed popularity with fantastic designs available and beautiful yarns.

During this course, Jennifer Smart (Mulberry & Flax and Great Southern Yarn) will introduce you to the basics of knitting and help you develop the skills needed to follow a pattern and create your own garments.
This is a 4 week course covering the following skills:
Week One
Using cotton yarn you'll knit a face cloth. The simple square design will teach you how to cast on, knit the basic stitch - ‘garter’ and cast off.
Week Two
You will learn the second stitch - purl. You'll cast on a beanie and work towards completing a flat beanie. This is a straightforward rectangle construction easily adapted for a child or adult. You will learn how to do a ‘rib’ border used for most waistbands, cuffs and beanie brims.
Week Three
You will finish off your beanies! Jennifer will show you how to weave in the yarn ends and sew up the side seams to complete your beanie. You'll also learn how to make pompoms and tassels, both great decorative additions to any project.
Week Four
A few technical tips! How to pick up dropped stitches - it’s part of knitting! How to read a pattern and practise some of the common abbreviations found in most patterns. A quick look at Ravelry - the go to website when you’re looking for a new project. There are so many yarns available now and understanding yarn terms will help you choose the right yarn for your chosen project.

Knitting is a very social craft, and this course offers a great opportunity to spend time with a friend, make new friends and learn a new skill!
