Abstract expressionism is a post World War 2 movement born in New York and characterised by non-representational art. It emphasises spontaneous mark-making and gesture, and the use of large-scale canvases. Key figures in the movement include Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Helen Frankenthaler. Abstract expressionism allows the artist to elevate the mundane with a fresh personal response to stimuli.
Work with Jane Lander over 4 Thursday mornings to start developing your own visual language to express your ideas using mixed media including acrylic paint, ink, graphite and pastel. In this course the emphasis will be on communicating with colour and mark-making in a loose and gestural manner.This approach relies on the student being present to the moment and what that moment delivers.
Some previous painting experience is recommended for this course.

About Jane Lander
Jane has an established practice with over 30 years experience. Her work is held in many collections including the Newcastle Art Gallery, Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, Maitland Art Gallery, Muswellbrook Art Gallery and Broken Hill Art Gallery. Lander is the 2022 winner of the Newcastle Club Foundation Art Prize and has been a finalist in many national prizes including The Dobell Drawing Prize, The Blake Travelling Art Prize, The NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting prize and The Kilgour Art Prize. Jane holds a Bachelor of Teaching (secondary, visual arts).
Workshop Schedule
This workshop runs over four (4) weeks on Thursday mornings starting on 3rd September through until 24th September.
