This day of teacher education includes a series of three NESA endorsed workshops which are designed to inspire and inform educators on the "why and how" to implement Aboriginal perspectives in the classroom. The first session sets the scene and provides the background on why Aboriginal perspectives are important and how to approach implementing them in the classroom. The second workshop is an introduction to Possum Skin Cloaks and the third session "Interwoven" is another hands-on introduction to Aboriginal weaving.

Completing this training will contribute 6hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 1.1.2, 2.2.2 & 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

The workshops cost between $60 and $89 per session. Click on the link below to book :)

Workshop Schedule

This is a series of three workshops from 9-4pm on Saturday 21 September. These workshops are designed specifically for teachers.

9-11am: How to implement Aboriginal perspectives $60pp
Why: Who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people? Why do we need to embed culture content into our classrooms? How does closing the Gap relate to my classroom?

How: What does this look like? How to be culturally appropriate in your region. Addressing and understanding the barriers for the students, teacher, parent and management.

Implementing strategies: What is a reliable and valid resource? Explore the cultural revivals sweeping the nation. Addressing outcomes.

The session will encourage most educators to have a go at implementing Aboriginal perspectives.

11:30-1:30 Possum Skin Cloaks introduction $89pp
This practical based course has been designed to provide an understanding of Possum Skin Cloaks, the purpose, process and techniques. Educators participate in the making of a keep sake to take back to your service (arm band), and have the opportunity to work (sew, design and burn) on a larger scale project such as a baby blanket.

We explore how this content is appropriate in the context of the Australian Curriculum and demonstrate how these activities and knowledges can be connected into your day to day curriculum.

2-4pm Interwoven (Aboriginal weaving) $89 pp
Designed for Educators this practical based course has been designed to provide an understanding of Aboriginal weaving, the purpose, process and various techniques. Educators have the opportunity to learn 4 processes and make examples to take back into their services.

We explore how this content is appropriate in the context of the EYLF and demonstrate how these activities and knowledges can be connected into your day to day curriculum, within the framework of the EYLF.
